Toshiba plans to release small-sized nuclear reactors

The Japanese company Toshiba is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of nuclear reactors. Her position in this capacity could be further strengthened in the coming years, according to the source. According to published data, in the near future, Toshiba will begin construction of small-sized nuclear power sources.

The word “small” in the context of nuclear reactors should be understood as follows: the structure can be located on an area of ​​approximately 6 x 1.8 m. The declared power output is 200 kW. Such a reactor can take over the supply of electricity to a large building or city block.

According to Toshiba, the reactor is extremely safe, designed to operate in automatic mode and not subject to overheating. Unlike the reactors in operation today, the novelty does not have rods that control the course of the reaction. Instead, tanks are used with liquid lithium-6, an isotope that effectively absorbs neutrons. The reaction control principle is illustrated by the following diagram.

The reservoir is connected to a vertical pipe located in the core of the reactor. There is an inert gas at the other end of the pipe. When the temperature rises, lithium-6 expands, compresses the gas and fills the pipe, penetrating into the core of the reactor. As it absorbs neutrons, the reaction slows down. In other words, the mechanical movement of the rods is replaced by the fluid movement controlled by the reaction temperature. The structure is completely autonomous and, according to the company, remains operational for 40 years. The cost of one kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by the new reactor, according to Toshiba, does not exceed 5 cents. This is about half the cost of electricity available on the electricity grid today.

Toshiba expects to build Japan’s first small reactor in 2021. A year later, she will begin to promote these energy sources in the markets of Europe and America.
