Winchester Systems Expands RAID 6 Arrays Up to 60TB

Winchester Systems Announces 60TB Max SATA Arrays for Storage Solutions. The device uses 1TB drives. To compensate for the increased failure rate caused by the increase in the number of drives, the company’s engineers implemented support for RAID 6 in the storage.

FlashDisk SX-2302S array (top two pictures) is made in the form of a basic 2U module, which contains a RAID controller and 12 hard drives. Up to four expansion chassis, also 2U in size, can be connected to the base module, each of which, in turn, can accommodate 12 hard drives. In other words, the total number of drives is 60. The use of high-capacity hard drives with a SATA interface, according to the manufacturer, allowed us to obtain a low specific cost of storage per unit of volume. For connection to hosts, the SX-2302S array is equipped with two SAS 4x ports.

In the version with a redundant controller, FlashDisk SX-2304R (bottom photo), the number of expansion modules is three, and the total number of drives is 64, which makes the total array size equal to 64 TB. The presence of four SAS 4x ports allows, in fact, to get a “SAN-In-A-Box” system (“ready-made storage with network connection”), since it allows connecting up to four servers without the use of additional equipment – adapters or switches.

When installed in a standard 42U chassis, the SX-2300 Series FlashDisk arrays provide configurations up to 252 TB. Among the main areas of application of such storages, the company names data archives, video archives of security systems, medical systems for image processing and storage, backup tools, virtual tape libraries, data collection systems, video and sound processing. The array performance claims are impressive, with a steady state transfer rate of 1150 MB / s and an IOPS of 78,000.

Receiving orders for FlashDisk SX-2304R arrays with 1 TB hard drives has already begun. The cost of the base configuration is approximately $ 16,000.
