Six times faster than DDR2-800: Elpida launches the world’s fastest RAM
Japanese company Elpida Memory unveils world’s fastest DRAM. 512 Mbit chips operating at an equivalent frequency of 4.8 GHz use the Rambus XDR architecture. According to the manufacturer, the new memory has a bandwidth of 9.6 GB / s (for one device). This makes it an ideal choice for performance-critical applications such as high definition televisions (HDTVs), game consoles, PCs, servers and workstations.
Elpida’s new 512MB memory (EDX5116ADSE-5E-E) features x16 / x8 / x4 programmable logic (8 banks) and six times (at x16 mode) the bandwidth of DDR2-800, now the de facto industry standard.
Among the key features of the new memory are technologies developed by Rambus: Differential Rambus Signaling Level (DRSL), which reduces noise; Octal Data Rate (ODR), which transmits eight data bits per clock cycle, which is equivalent to 4.8 GHz (real clock speed is 600 MHz); FlexPhase for precise chip timing.
XDR DRAM is part of the XDR architecture, which includes the XDR Memory Controller, XDR IO controller interface cell and XCG (XDR Clock Generator). Together, the listed components allow the minimum number of microcircuits to implement the fastest RAM subsystem.
Elpida 70 nm process technology is used to release 4.8 GHz XDR chips. Microcircuits are designed in 104-pin FBGA packages. Elpida EDX5116ADSE-5E-E preview samples will begin shipping in December, with serial production scheduled for April 2021.
