Microsoft, Toshiba and Hollywood studios team up to promote HD DVD

Microsoft and Toshiba join forces with HD DVD supporters in the optical format war. The Advanced Interactivity Consortium (AIC) they announced is “accelerating industry adoption of enhanced interactivity and interoperability across a wide range of HD DVD products.”.

The alliance, in addition to Microsoft and Toshiba, will include major Hollywood studios – Dreamworks Animation, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros and Universal Studios, which already own a solid piece of the entertainment market. Together, they are expected to be able to create new interactive games, video programs, films and other products, thereby increasing their market share. AIC’s areas of interest include products for television, personal computers, cell phones and game consoles.

Microsoft says the AIC will be open to new members, although Sony and other Blu-ray backers are unlikely to join for obvious reasons.

According to experts, the main motive behind Microsoft’s initiative, which traditionally has a strong position in the PC market, is the desire of the software industry giant to expand its presence in the home entertainment market, where now you can bet on interest in high-definition video.
