New Sony laser diode to make Blu-ray drives more compact

Sony announced this week that it has made progress in a blue-violet laser diode that’s just 3mm thick.

Developed in partnership with Nichia Corporation, a company that is leading the way in increasing HD recording speeds.

Sony itself says that the use of the new diode will allow Blu-ray drives to be created with a thickness of no more than 9.5 mm.

In addition to reducing the size, the novelty has one more plus – the production of such diodes will be cheaper than those currently produced, which will not slow down to affect the price of finished products with Blu-ray support.

It is reported that the joint solution of Sony and Nichia will support work with dual-layer media.
