NI Introduces Industry’s First PXI Express Timing Controller

National Instruments (NI) Expands PXI Express Product Line with PXI-6682 Timing Controller. The module is capable of synchronizing PXI systems using GPS, Inter-Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) and IEEE 1588. The need for synchronization may be related to the need to share multiple systems, accurately tag events, and improve measurement accuracy in automated test and data acquisition applications.

The controller is the industry’s first in this category for PXI Express. It makes it possible to synchronize systems with an accuracy of the order of nanoseconds. The controller can also be used to synchronize systems with the PXI Express interface with other equipment used in instrumentation (GPIB, VXI, etc.).

The controller generates clock pulses with a frequency from 0 to 105 MHz with high accuracy. Includes a GPS receiver that provides time, position and speed data. Implemented IRIG-B decoding and IEEE 1588 protocol support. The module is designed to temporarily mark and trigger measurements or events within large physical objects, such as an airplane or bridge, as well as geographically distributed systems such as power grids or particle accelerators. The controller can be used as a primary source of time in the IEEE 1588 network.
