Bright LEDs don’t shine legally: Nichia files another lawsuit against Seoul Semiconductor
Most recently, the Korean company Seoul Semiconductor became the hero of the news with the release of “the brightest LED in the world”, which, according to the manufacturer, is capable of creating a luminous flux of 420 lumens. Less than a month later, there was a reason to write again about Seoul Semiconductor, but not in such a pleasant context for the company.
Another well-known LED manufacturer, Nichia, filed a lawsuit against Seoul Semiconductor in Seoul Central District Court on October 10, alleging infringement of one of its LED technology patents.
The lawsuit alleges that Seoul Semiconductor’s Z-Power LED P9 series of white LEDs are in violation of Nichia’s Korean patent (patent number 491482).
By now, other lawsuits by Nichia against Seoul Semiconductor have been opened: in the US, Nichia accuses a Korean company of infringement of a patent for side-emitting white LEDs; in Japan, Seoul Semiconductor and its distributor, Kyoei Sangyo, are accused of infringing Nichia patents for white LEDs (all the same Z-Power LED P9); Seoul Semiconductor in Korea accused of infringing Nichia patent for white LEDs with planar emission. In all cases, Nichia seeks compensation for damage and the prohibition of further activities of the defendants that violate its rights.
