Samsung specialists create a flat-panel digital X-ray detector
In collaboration with medical device manufacturer Vatech, Samsung Electronics has developed a flat panel X-ray detector (FPXD) for X-ray machines.
The main part of the detector is a sensor that converts X-rays into digital signals that form a visible image. Until now, the bulk of such equipment uses a sensitive film, and a chemical development process is required to obtain a picture. FPXD is known to use Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology. This has improved the quality and resolution of images, reducing the time and cost of obtaining images, since the new approach eliminates the film and the process of its processing.
The geometric dimensions of the matrix on which the image is formed are 45 x 46 cm (61 cm diagonally), the resolution is 3072 x 3072 pixels (9.4 megapixels).
According to a company representative, who drew an analogy with the situation in the market for conventional cameras, manufacturers of X-ray machines will be able to completely switch to digital technology within a few years.
Samsung’s detector is not limited to medicine. For example, FPXD can become part of construction quality control systems or airport security systems.
The device will start shipping in the first quarter of 2021.
