ATI Radeon HD 3800 series officially unveiled
AMD Officially Unveils and Shipments of ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Novelties represent the world’s first GPUs to support DirectX Microsoft 10.1, manufactured at 55 nm and designed to work in multiprocessor configurations (ATI CrossFireX technology).
According to the manufacturer, the ATI Radeon HD 3800 series “heralds a new era of performance” in the field of PC gaming at a price corresponding to the mainstream segment. Since the premiere, two products will be available: ATI Radeon HD 3850 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory (middle image) at a suggested price of $ 179 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 with 512MB of GDDR4 memory (bottom image) at a suggested price of $ 219. The price-performance ratio suggests that the ATI Radeon HD 3800 will redefine market segments by providing a wide range of consumers with access to high-performance graphics solutions. The launch of the GPU series is also the first step in the launch of AMD’s enthusiast platform, codenamed Spider.
New processors are designed for installation in systems with PCI Express 2 bus.0. Providing 16 GB / s of bandwidth, it clearly outperforms its predecessor. PCI Express Combination 2.0 and HyperTransport 3 in the next generation of AMD platforms will provide the opportunity to significantly improve gaming performance.
TSMC 55nm process used to release ATI Radeon HD 3800 series GPUs. The move to tighter regulations has resulted in a 2-fold improvement in performance per unit of power and significantly reduced the size of the chip. In addition, the new processors use the patented ATI PowerPlay technology, which allows flexible power consumption control depending on the load.
Another important feature of the ATI Radeon HD 3850 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 is the support for high definition video, implemented using the Unified Video Decoder (UVD). The presence of UVD improves the speed and quality of decoding data from HD-DVD and Blu-ray (H.264 and VC-1). Processors have built-in HDMI support (with HDCP and audio output).
ASUS, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, Gigabyte, HIS, Info-Tek, MSI, Palit, Sapphire, Tul and Visiontek have already announced their intention to supply products based on new GPUs.
