Three research groups working at MIT and two other higher education institutions have received DARPA funding through the HI-MEMS program. The year 2021 is called the first important stage of work, when the project participants will have to demonstrate “controlled flight of insects on a leash.”. The advantage of insects is the possibility of implantation of electrodes, chips and sensors without surgery, at the stage of transformation of the larva into an adult. A separate story is the training of operators who will control the movements of the winged scouts. It is interesting that the power of the “onboard” electronics will have to be provided by the insects themselves – in particular, it is planned to convert part of the energy of the “muscles” that set the wings in motion into electricity.

By the end of the third phase of research, a flying cyborg should be ready, capable, under the control of a remote control or a global navigation system (GPS), to reach a target located at a distance of about one hundred meters with an accuracy of five meters. It is planned to use a variety of MEMS sensors as a payload: video cameras, microphones, chemical sensors. Insects are planned to be used in situations where a reconnaissance mission is too dangerous or, for some reason, impossible for humans.

The long-term plans include “connecting” insects to the sense organs – in other words, the operator will not only “steer” the fly, but also look at the world through its eyes.
