Agere systems HDA modem – Device Driver
Barcelona is tested in desktop applications, games, and simulates how Phenom works

A set of interesting tests conducted by the AnandTech resource. Having got his hands on a stand based on the AMD Barcelona processor, he did not once again test it in the SPEC CPU2021, but tried to simulate the operation of the upcoming Phenom processors on its basis.

Let’s start with a test configuration:

  • Motherboard: Supermicro H8DMU+
  • BIOS revision: DMU8157v3.ROM
  • Processors: 2 x Opteron 2350 (2.0 GHz)
  • Memory: (8 x 1GB DDR2-667)
  • Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ES (400 GB)
  • PSU: 700 W
  • OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

Thus, we see that the source has at its disposal a standard two-processor server based on the new high-performance AMD Opteron 2350, Socket-1207 processors. For an objective assessment, one of the processors was pulled out of its socket, but the place of the standard ATI ES1000 graphics core after a slight modification of the motherboard and the video card itself was taken by the GeForce 8800 GTX.

A pair of dual-core Opterons operating at the same frequency was chosen as a rival. With the caveat that the new Opterons could show better results on the next revisions of motherboards, and that they only support DDR2-667 buffered memory, which is slightly slower than desktop memory operating at the same frequency, the results were as follows:

On average, the advantage of AMD’s “home-made” quad-core platform was 11.6%, and if we discard the tests in iTunes and Lightwave 3D, then 14.4% over the usual dual-core. As you can see, the two additional cores of the game were most favorably accepted (tests were carried out at a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels).

The second part of AnandTech’s tests was an attempt to simulate the operation of the so far inaccessible Phenoms at 2.5 GHz, for which the new Opteron worked at 200 MHz FSB with a multiplier of 12.5.
Increasing the frequency by a quarter led to a 15-20% increase in system performance as a whole, depending on the application, even despite the “brake” in the form of slow memory.

Summing up, we can say that testing only confirmed once again Barcelona’s advantage over K8, which AMD itself has repeatedly spoken about. And here is how it will be in the fight against Intel Penryn? Will show the time.
