In addition to cheap laptops, Africa will receive a free supercomputer

Nigerian schoolchildren will no doubt appreciate laptops entering the country through OLPC, but IBM believes the developing world needs slightly more computing power to bridge the digital divide.

The computer giant has decided to donate one of the BlueGene / P supercomputers to a computing center located in the southwest of South Africa, in Cape Town.

The supercomputer will be owned by the Meraka Institute, which will be able to provide access to its resources to interested academic and government institutions. The system, capable of performing 14 trillion calculations every second, is five times faster than the fastest computer currently on the African continent. For comparison, this is approximately equal to the performance of 14,000 OLPC XO laptops.

The new system is planned to be used to solve such problems as modeling the local effects of climate change, finding more efficient ways of processing minerals, predicting mutations and the spread of infectious diseases.

IBM considers BlueGene / P worth 1.5 million.Doll., as an investment in the future of the African economy.
