S3 Graphics surprises: new GPUs in Chrome 400 support DirectX10.1 and HD video
For several years now, a dual power has reigned in the market of discrete GPUs – only NVIDIA and ATI (now AMD) are fighting with varying success. Many of the companies that pioneered 3D graphics are now taken over by others or just went bankrupt.
The market shares of Matrox and VIA, which at one time acquired S3 Graphics, but did not deprive it of a certain independence, are much smaller.
Nevertheless, these companies are still afloat and are even able, albeit rarely, to pleasantly surprise.
This is exactly what S3 Graphics did with Chrome 400 Series GPUs.
In fact, they have everything that a state-of-the-art GPU relies on, namely DirectX10 support.1, Shader Model 4.1, OpenGL 2.1, programmable unified shader architecture, support for PCI Express 2 interface.0, hardware accelerated HD video decoding (H.264, VC1 and MPEG-2)
via ChromotionHD 2 technology.0, support for Dual-Link DVI and HDMI outputs with HDCP.
The list inspires respect until 64 (!) -bit memory interface and technology for using system memory by a video processor, AcceleRAM.
Alas, Chrome 400 will be only a budget solution and can only compete with younger models from NVIDIA and AMD. However, let’s wait, it is quite possible that the architecture lends itself to scalability and after many years S3 Graphics will still release a product equal to the three-dimensional graphics Savage3D.
