For eight years, SmartMetric specialists have been creating a miniature biometric identification tool

SmartMetric has announced the release of a line of personal identification cards based on biometric data. Called SmartMetric Biometric ID Pass, the devices use fingerprint scanning technology. A thin strip of silicon sensor is embedded directly into the card. It is enough for the user to swipe it with a finger so that the card reads the fingerprint, verifies it with the sample, and sends the data over the radio channel to the control unit for access to the safe or the front door.

Compatible with existing contactless identification systems, the SmartMetric Biometric ID Pass is said to offer increased security through the use of biometric data.

If the card is lost or stolen, an attacker will not gain access to the system and will not be able to enter the protected area. At the same time, by eliminating the need for contact with a fixed access control device, SmartMetric Biometric ID Pass cards provide the high capacity of entrance doors, which is necessary for systems installed in large companies and government agencies.

Since there is no need for a centralized repository of fingerprint samples, the system has increased flexibility and resistance to tampering attempts. According to the manufacturer, the card is the smallest fingerprint reader and, in fact, the only portable biometric identification tool of its kind. This allowed the compilers of the official press release to describe the release of the novelty with the words “a breakthrough in biometric identification”.

On the technical side, the card is a very complex device, creating which, the engineers had to overcome many obstacles. More than 150 active and passive components are mounted on four layers that form the card. As stated, in total, it took more than eight years to work on the project, including mastering the serial production. The company is currently ready to produce one million cards monthly.
