Less Isn’t Worse: Half Height Quantum LTO-4

Quantum Introduces LTO-4 Half Height (HH) Tape Drive. According to the manufacturer, the reduction in size did not affect the characteristics of the product. Provides the same performance, security, and reliability as full-height LTO-4 drives. The novelty allows you to record 800 GB of data on one cartridge. Host exchange rate is 432 GB / h. These figures outperform previous generation LTO drives by 100% and 50%, respectively.

An interesting property of the drive is the energy-saving Green Mode, in which energy consumption is reduced by turning off the device components during periods of inactivity. Notably, even in active mode, the new drive consumes less power than many other LTO-3 and LTO-4 full and half height drives. An important means of reducing power consumption is FastSense technology, which adjusts the operating speed in order to increase the exchange rate – thanks to this, the backup is completed faster, the manufacturer claims, which leads to energy savings.

Data security features of the Quantum LTO-4 HH include 256-bit AES encryption and support for WORM cartridges. Another feature of the drive is the constant verification of all data (SmartVerify technology).

The LTO-4 is equipped with a Serial Attached SCSI interface. It is compatible with LTO-3 and LTO-2 cartridges (in the second case, only read operation is available). Available in three options: internal, external and 1U rack-mountable. Symantec Backup Exec QuickStart comes with a MSRP of $ 3,849.
